Love Delivers Near-Perfect Performance at Richmond

If there was any question who had the car to beat Sunday night at Richmond Raceway, Jamel Love answered it almost immediately.

Love started from the pole and proceeded to put together a nearly flawless performance, leading 168 of 169 laps and holding off a remarkable late charge from Shawn Hook to capture Race 5 of the inaugural MLSR A-Open Series season.

Richmond wasn't necessarily as simple as the final laps-led total suggests.

The race began with trouble almost immediately.

A Lap 1 incident stacked up several drivers deeper in the field, with Adam Ramsey, Joshua Sanok and Joshua Wise among those caught in the early chaos. The caution gave the field an immediate reset, but once racing resumed, Love wasted little time reestablishing control.

Behind him, the fight was considerably more complicated.

Dallas Manus, Ethan Thompson and Zack Domer were among the early challengers, while several drivers struggled with the notoriously difficult exit of Turn 2. Michael Patrick, Jason Trocki and others experienced early incidents, but many of those spins remained green and allowed the race to quickly settle into a long run.

That was exactly what Love needed.

As the laps accumulated, the No. 3 began stretching the field. Traffic became the biggest obstacle for the leader, but even as Love encountered slower cars, the drivers behind him struggled to consistently take advantage.

While Love controlled the front, one of the night's biggest stories was developing much farther back.

Shawn Hook had started 25th.

By roughly Lap 40, Hook had already climbed approximately 16 positions and reached the top 10. The No. 88 continued working the bottom groove and picking off cars as the run developed, turning what began as a difficult starting position into a legitimate charge toward the front.

And Hook wasn't the only driver moving.

Christopher Toppings started 35th, Ronald Breland rolled off 32nd, and Johnathan Pereira started 33rd. All three steadily climbed through the field as Richmond rewarded drivers who could survive the early trouble and manage their equipment.

But no matter who moved forward, the same car remained at the front.

Love.

The No. 3 dictated the race through long runs, traffic and the changing balance of Richmond's surface. Even as the rest of the field searched for alternate grooves and opportunities to gain time, nobody could take the lead away under racing conditions.

Only Chris Etchepare officially led another lap, leaving Love credited with an extraordinary 168 laps led.

The closing portion finally gave the field another opportunity.

Hook had completed his march through the field and put himself into second, setting up a dramatic contrast: the driver who had controlled virtually every lap against the driver who had spent the entire night coming from the back.

Love had track position.

Hook had momentum.

Behind them, Jamal Pough had worked his way from 11th into third, while Zack Domer remained in the fight from fourth.

The final run became closer than Love probably would have preferred.

Hook continued closing and arrived within striking distance, but after spending the entire night working through traffic, there simply weren't enough laps left to finish the comeback.

Love crossed the line just 0.454 seconds ahead of Hook, completing one of the most dominant statistical performances MLSR has seen through the opening weeks of its inaugural season.

Hook finished second after gaining 23 positions.

Pough completed the podium in third after starting 11th, with Domer fourth and Joshua Sanok fifth.

Adam Ramsey recovered from the opening-lap trouble to finish sixth after starting 18th. Toppings completed an enormous 35th-to-7th charge, Joseph Essenberg finished eighth, Michael Patrick recovered from his early spin to ninth, and Gary May rounded out the top 10.

The results tell two very different stories about Richmond.

Hook's run demonstrated just how much ground could be made up with patience and persistence. Toppings gained 28 positions. Breland went from 32nd to 11th. Pereira climbed from 33rd to 12th.

But none of them could change the story at the very front.

Love didn't need a comeback.

He didn't need a late strategy gamble.

He simply took control from the beginning and refused to give it up.

169 laps. 168 led. One winner. Richmond belonged to Jamel Love.
