McGill Controls Talladega Late, Tightens Fire For Effect ARCA Championship Fight

Race 4 of the Fire For Effect ARCA Series brought Major League Sim Racing to Talladega Superspeedway for a 76-lap ARCA event that played out differently than many superspeedway races. Instead of constant lane changes and aggressive pack movement, Talladega became a cleaner, more patient race where track position mattered and the field spent long stretches locked into single-file formation.

Holden McGill took full advantage of the race’s disciplined closing stretch. After leading 36 laps, McGill managed the draft from the front and held off Colby Cooper by just 0.052 seconds at the line. The margin was close, but the finish reflected the tone of the closing run: plenty of pressure behind the leader, but not enough organization from the pack to break McGill’s control.

The deciding factor was timing. As the laps wound down, the field appeared to wait for the right moment to step out of line and make a run. That move either came too late or never fully developed. With drivers hesitant to give up position and risk falling backward, McGill was able to keep the race in his hands and finish off one of the most important wins of the Fire For Effect ARCA season.

Cooper finished second and stayed firmly in the championship conversation, while Gerrad Essenberg completed the podium with a strong run from sixth to third. Joe Konen finished fourth, with Cody Porter rounding out the top five after starting from the pole and also leading 36 laps.

Porter’s fifth-place finish kept him at the top of the standings with 127 points, but McGill’s win cut into the advantage. McGill now sits second with 120 points, while Cooper is third at 116 and Cole Crawford remains close at 114. With the championship battle tightening, Talladega may end up being remembered less for chaos and more for how much it shifted the title pressure.

The race’s biggest hard-luck moment came during the pit cycle. Derrick Darby’s No. 2 machine was tagged entering pit road after what appeared to be hesitation over whether he was pitting. The contact shuffled Darby out of fourth position and left him to recover to an eighth-place finish, costing him a stronger result in a race where passing back through the field was difficult.

Outside of that moment, the race stayed remarkably clean for Talladega. The field largely avoided the kind of major incidents that often define superspeedway events, but the tradeoff was a race where the draft remained controlled and most drivers protected position rather than forcing risky lane moves.

For the Fire For Effect ARCA Series, Race 3 added a new layer to the championship. McGill got the win, Porter protected the points lead, and Cooper remained within striking distance. With the front of the standings tightening, the series leaves Talladega with a cleaner race in the books and a title fight that is far from settled.
