“I did not want to see that caution. I really didn’t.” — Chris Cornett
MADISON, Ill. — Chris Cornett had already lost the front once.
He wasn't going to lose it again.
After an early restart penalty sent one of the fastest trucks in the field to pit road, Cornett spent much of Monday night's C-Open Series race at World Wide Technology Raceway working his way back into contention. By the closing laps, the No. 83 was exactly where it had been before the mistake — out front.
Then came Shawn Hook.
Then came the caution.
Then came the bumper.
Cornett survived all three, holding off Hook by just 0.267 seconds after a frantic overtime finish to score the victory at Gateway.
The finish capped a race in which the complexion changed repeatedly. Connor Cunningham started from the pole and led 16 laps, while Austin Craven, Max Ford, Chris Romano and others all spent time at the front. But no driver led more than Trenton Wilken, whose 45 laps out front made him the official race leader in that category.
Cornett's speed was apparent long before the finish.
The problem was getting to use it.
On an early restart with Max Ford controlling the field, Cornett accelerated before the leader and was assessed a black flag. What had been a run near the front suddenly became a recovery drive.
“I gunned and I got black flagged,” Cornett said afterward. From there, his focus shifted to getting himself back on a strategy that could return him to contention.
It worked.
As varying tire and fuel strategies reshuffled the field, Cornett methodically erased the damage. Wilken used track position to control a significant portion of the race, while Craven at one point opened a sizable advantage of his own. Ford led 27 laps and Cunningham remained a factor as different strategies cycled through the front.
But as the race entered its final stretch, the No. 83 came alive.
Cornett drove past Craven, then worked around Jacob Loesch before taking the lead from Wilken. What had looked like a potentially race-ending penalty earlier in the night had become little more than a detour.
With the final green-flag pit sequence approaching, however, the race was far from settled.
Cornett and Hook emerged as the two trucks to beat.
Hook pitted one lap later than Cornett on the final cycle, giving the No. 88 slightly fresher tires but leaving him roughly two to two-and-a-half seconds behind the leader.
Then he started coming.
A tenth here. Two tenths there.
With 16 laps remaining, Hook was steadily eating into Cornett's advantage. The gap eventually shrank to roughly three-tenths of a second as the two separated themselves from the rest of the fight.
Cornett knew exactly what Hook was doing.
He also believed Hook would eventually pay for it.
“I knew he pitted a lap later,” Cornett said. “He’s going to have one lap fresher.”
Rather than match Hook's charge lap for lap, Cornett tried to protect enough tire to defend once the No. 88 arrived.
That plan nearly unraveled when Cornett pushed too hard exiting Turn 2 and slapped the wall.
“I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m about to throw it away,’” Cornett said.
He regrouped.
And Hook encountered a problem of his own.
Once the No. 88 reached Cornett's wake, the closing rate stalled. Hook said afterward that dirty air began costing him rear grip, preventing him from completing the charge he had spent the entire run setting up.
Hook had gotten there.
He just couldn't get around him.
With only a couple of laps remaining, Cornett began rebuilding the advantage. The race appeared decided.
Then the caution flew.
Instead of cruising to the checkered flag, Cornett would have to defend the victory in overtime.
“I did not want to see that caution,” he said. “I really didn’t.”
The restart put Cornett and Hook side-by-side on the front row, with Loesch and Wilken directly behind them.
Cornett got the launch he needed.
Hook stayed with him.
Behind the leaders, the field erupted. Ford slid sideways during the first overtime lap and multiple trucks scrambled for position, but the race remained green.
One lap remained.
Hook finally had the opportunity he'd been chasing.
Coming off Turn 2, the No. 88 got the run. Cornett protected the bottom entering Turn 3, leaving Hook with one realistic option.
The bumper.
Hook used it.
Cornett's truck moved up the track but stayed underneath him. Hook tried to cross back underneath, but Cornett gathered the No. 83, drove back to the bottom and powered off Turn 4 with the lead still intact.
Hook later admitted he could have delivered a harder shot.
“I just didn’t want to wreck him,” Hook said.
That decision left the two separated by 0.267 seconds at the stripe.
Cornett had his win.
Hook settled for second, while Loesch finished third, Thompson fourth and Domer fifth. Craven finished sixth after leading 17 laps, and polesitter Cunningham came home seventh. Anthony Lee Abernathy charged from 22nd to eighth, with Joseph Essenberg and John Williams completing the top 10.
The raw speed deeper in the results also told part of the story. Ford finished 16th but recorded the race's fastest lap at 33.467 seconds. Wilken finished 17th despite leading a race-high 45 laps.
For Cornett, none of those twists mattered by the time he reached the finish line.
He had been at the front.
He had been sent to the back.
He had raced his way forward again, survived Hook's charge, watched a late caution erase his advantage and then taken a shot to the rear bumper with the victory on the line.
The No. 83 absorbed all of it.
And still won.
Afterward, Cornett dedicated the victory to a friend's family after the recent loss of her mother to cancer, explaining that the paint scheme on his truck had been created in her honor.
He had hoped to put that truck in Victory Lane sooner.
At Gateway, he finally did.
